PE Curriculum

The PE curriculum promotes lifelong health, teamwork, and resilience through diverse sports and daily activities. With regular competitions and supportive teaching, children develop confidence, sportsmanship, and a love for physical activity.

Intent

At Weston Lullingfields CE Primary School, we believe that Physical Education (PE) is essential for the holistic development of our children. Our intent is to provide all pupils with a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires and nurtures a lifelong love of physical activity, whilst fostering the development of well-rounded, confident individuals capable of facing challenges. As with all of our curriculum subjects our PE curriculum has our school vision at its heart.

‘But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.’

 Isaiah 40:31

At Weston Lullingfields, ‘within our small school big family with God’ community, we live out Isaiah’s message of hope through celebrating and nurturing resilience. Our curriculum promotes awe and wonder and is relevant to our children as we help them to prepare for all of life beyond our school gates.

We live out our vision through the Christian values of courage, perseverance, respect, and thankfulness with forgiveness threading through all values.

Theology

We understand that God’s heart is for all of us to soar like eagles. However, the reality is that we live in a world that is full of wows and ows – with all the challenges this leads to. God’s heart is for us to live in community where we gain the skills, confidence, and self-belief to overcome these challenges and therefore to soar.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum at Weston Lullingfields CE Primary School is carefully structured and designed to meet the needs and interests of all pupils. We implement our PE programme through the following strategies:

  • Curriculum Design: We follow the National Curriculum for PE, balancing a range of activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and swimming. Each unit is planned sequentially using the Get Set 4 PE planning and assessment tool, which enables teachers to build on skills, knowledge, and understanding effectively.
  • High-Quality Instruction: PE lessons are delivered by a combination of qualified class teachers and an experienced sports coach. This dual approach ensures that all lessons are engaging, dynamic, and infused with expertise. Teachers receive ongoing professional development to enhance their teaching skills and to stay updated on new methodologies.
  • Active Learning Environments: We structure PE lessons to be engaging and dynamic twice weekly, creating a vibrant environment that encourages participation. We utilise a variety of teaching styles, including direct instruction and inquiry-based learning, alongside differentiation techniques to accommodate varying abilities and encourage all pupils to participate fully.
  • Resilience Building: Our curriculum is designed to challenge pupils both physically and mentally, enabling them to develop resilience. Activities are structured to encourage risk-taking and problem-solving, helping pupils to navigate both success and setbacks, ultimately enhancing their mental health.
  • Assessment and Feedback: Comprehensive assessment methods are in place to monitor pupil progress, including formative assessments and self-assessment opportunities. Regular feedback is given, promoting personal growth and the setting of achievable goals. Get Set 4 PE aids in tracking the progress of students and enhancing their learning experience.
  • Extracurricular Opportunities: We provide a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports clubs and competitions. Pupils take part in cluster school sports events hosted by The Corbet School and Packwood Independent School, encouraging them to extend their learning beyond the classroom and fostering a sense of community.

Impact

The impact of our outstanding PE programme at Weston Lullingfields CE Primary School is evidenced through the following outcomes:

  • Pupil Participation: A high percentage of pupils actively participate in both curriculum and extracurricular PE, demonstrating an increased engagement with physical activity both within and outside school.
  • Improved Health and Well-being: Pupils show a marked improvement in their physical fitness, mental resilience, and overall health, contributing positively to their general well-being.
  • Skill Development: Pupils consistently demonstrate high levels of competence in a range of physical skills, as evidenced in their assessment results and through their ability to apply these skills in competitive scenarios.
  • Personal and Social Growth: Increased confidence, teamwork, and communication skills have been observed among pupils, alongside a greater sense of responsibility for their own learning and behaviour within physical education settings.
  • Mental Health Benefits: Pupils report improved wellbeing and emotional regulation, leading to enhanced focus and performance in both PE and across the curriculum.

Through this holistic approach to PE, we ensure that our students not only excel in physical capabilities but also develop as well-rounded individuals ready to lead active lives and contribute positively to society and therefore to ‘Soar Like Eagles’.
